Best PR Twits – Week of Mar 27-April 2, 2011

by PR Coach on April 8, 2011

Sez here there’s 113 new PR Twit posts this week!

Here’s another of our regular Best PR Twits posts. While Charlie Sheen was crashing in Detroit, PR Twits were amping up tweets on public relations,  investor relations, media relations, media training, news media, social media and lots more.

If you didn’t see the PR Coach’s daily stream on Twitter last week, read on for 113 tweets and PR tips that I hope PR and communications pros will enjoy!

Ethics was a hot PR topic this week. Mike Shaffer looked at three types of PR “crazy” including LadyGaga, Charlie Sheen and Chris Brown. Steve Earle wondered if UK PR agencies were doing the right thing by representing foreign dictators.

A new Ford social marketing campaign provided a hilarious spoof of PR people that is a must-see. Valerina Maltoni offered strategic advice on moving PR upstream while Paul Roberts got frustrated at people trying to define public relations. Douglas Anderson reminded us to revisit the Arthur W Page PR principles and what they mean to us today.

On the practical side, Mihaela Lica Butler examined the shift from the traditional press release to the more effective social media news release. Meanwhile, Stephen Silvers found that many journalists still think PR people are idiots while Jim Crawford shared four reasons why he thinks journalists and only the best PR people.

Bloggers will enjoy Abby Gilmore’s useful list of 55 content marketing resources and Technshare’s seven tips on why your blog needs a LinkedIn page. Erin Ruben examines how brands are having success using blogs to tell stories and mobilize communities.

Jonathan Bernstein thought recent crisis management moves by Google were effective while Marc Babej saw a total communications down at Fukushima nuclear plant operator Tepco.

In the meantime, Brad Phillips highlights GoDaddy.com CEO Bob Parsons’ media interviews trying to justify his elephant hunting expedition. The video clips show an unrepentant ego gone wild and offer useful media training lessons. Phillips’ five worst video media disasters are also worth a look.

In marketing news, Linda Duke shares 10 marketing tips for restaurants and AdWeek had a list of its 100 most influential TV shows. It’s an enjoyable walk down memory lane.

This week, we had some really valuable media relations tips and resources including: Cision’s 10 top Bloomberg journalists on Twitter; a new media relations service called Reporter Connection which connects journalists with experts; and Rich Becker’s very funny top five ways to get media attention.

Practical media relations tips included: how to pitch with the fewest words possible; the anatomy of a successful pitch; eight annoying pitch phrases reporters hate; and 10 easy ways to get amazing PR.

There was a wealth of thoughtful articles on media, trends and key journalism issues. Keith Trivitt suggested that there is still a lot of life left in the old media yet. Alan Mutter highlights the almost impossible challenges facing the publishing industry and Ken Doctor looks at the newsonomics of oblivion.

In journalism, David Carr wrote in The New York Times about The Atavist, a new home for long-form journalism. Bill Keller thoughtfully, and not so favorably, looked at video “journalist” James O’Keefe with WikiLeaks’ Julian Assange and their respective influences as agenda-journalists.

And, if you love newspapers, you’ll definitely want to see David Friedman’s wonderful piece on what the New York Times Magazine was like 100 years ago.

There were two notable PR Fails this week. GE managed to flub its response to criticism of not paying its fair share of corporate taxes while Demand Media’s astroturfing got it the predictable negative attention.

Jeff Domansky suggested how to get out from the bottom of the social media dogpile. James Ball showed how to create a Facebook feed for a journalist or other purpose while Niall Harbison presented an excellent list of 100 best social media blog posts so far in 2011.

Steve Cody explored the odd lack of Financial 500 chief marketing officers’ participation in social media. Ever wanted a blueprint on social media policies? Brian Solis offers his thoughts on the rules of social media engagement.

Doc Searls provided a wonderful article – World wide puddle. He explores the Internet, the impact of technology and the potential for these digital tools to overwhelm us if we are not more thoughtful about how we use them.

And, we’ve got lots more including twitter tips and strategies, PR jobs and PR intern opportunities, writing tips, the usual weekend funnies and much more. So, just dive in, won’t you?

Note: Posts marked with W are PR Coach “winners” well worth reading.
