Twitter PR essentials

I just love the sound of Twitter in the morning, don’t you? This week, we’ve got 41 42 terrific Twitter tips from a range of experts to ensure you’re at the top of your PR Twitter game.

It’s still one of my favorite and most useful social media tools and channels and it just keeps growing and getting better. I think that’s because Twitter’s so intuitive and easy to use. That’s not to say it doesn’t have a learning curve and a unique etiquette but it is proving to be a valuable tool in the PR 2.0 toolkit.

The numbers are impressive and the accompanying Infographic from Touch Agency (thanks folks!) says it all. Just click on it to view it in glorious full size. Here’s what matters to public relations Twits:

  • 200 million users
  • 1 billion new tweets posted weekly
  • 5:00 pm is the best time to get re-tweeted
  • 40% come from a mobile device (up 182% in the past year)
  • more than 1 million apps  registered (new app every 1.5 seconds)
  • 70% of twitter accounts are outside the US.

PR pros are making use of Twitter in some important ways. Witness the rise of its use in investor relations, as a communications support channel during a crisis, with links for news release distribution, to pitch media with story ideas, as a customer relations tool and so many other uses.

How about its value for research or for product, issue, customer, media, activist and news monitoring? We’re really now only discovering how to use it for more sophisticated strategies such as trend analysis, community engagement, curation, crowd sourcing and more.

No one has yet monetized Twitter in a big way but that remains its charm, utility and simplicity in the face of overwhelming commercialism on other channels such as Facebook. Let’s hope that Twitter stays true to its roots.

It really is an essential PR tool and as new applications come online, Twitter is destined to remain important for public relations.
